Speaker(s)
Alan Blum, York University
Host
059 - Canadian Sociological Association (CSA)

Dr. Blum will relate the CSA conference theme to the impact of academia as an attempt to remove itself from its ivory tower makes central its relation to a public outside academia while glossing as unspoken and untheorized the struggle within the academic community for many reflective parties to make an impact. As a contrast, the relations of academics to their colleagues ‘inside’ to those reputed to be alike and similar, is a definitive precondition for reflecting upon their relation to the ‘outside. The exploration of the discourse on the impact of a field on the public must be fundamentally ambiguous and open to inquiry.
