This session is the second of two linked panels exploring the facts and legends of medieval Ethiopian history. This panel focuses on Ethiopian legends and literature from this period. Paper 1 explores the legend of St Yared, a reputed 6th-century composer of hymns and an important figure in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Paper 2, by a professional archaeologist, discusses how the legend of Queen Gudit intersects with the archaeological record while Paper 3 explores how the legends of Gudit and the Queen of Sheba helped shape the legitimacy of the Solomonic dynasty that came to power in Ethiopia in the later 13th century.
