Daily Chorus is an architectonic media intervention that visualizes and sonifies the daily ebb and flow of activity in Toronto. By drawing together threads of human activity as well as environmental conditions, the artwork explores the daily rhythms of the city’s interconnected systems of built and grown environments. By hearing, interacting, and adding to a shared sonic experience, we intend for participants to feel a sense of connection to rhythms in our communities that are often invisible and sometimes neglected.
Using 9 channel speakers, 4 channel projectors, and an interactive physical installation, Daily Chorus presents a time lapse of 48 hours of the city of Toronto. Environmental data encompasses the dynamically changing light levels, humidity, wind speed, and air particulate measurements as they fluctuate. Tweet data involving the keyword Toronto is taken as a representation of the changing noosphere discourse and is also represented in a 48-hour cycle and analyzed for sentiment on a range from positive to neutral to negative. Believing that everything is interconnected, we are interested in the question of how tweet sentiment patterns shift with the atmospheric conditions of the city. In the installation, collective patterns condense into auditory and visual signals in an immersive experience that intends to raise questions about the supposed separation of planetary built and natural systems and engage participants in thinking of the holistic ecology of the city, offering an experience of connection to this urban meta-organism of which we’re each a part.
