Building Bridges of Solidarity for Hungarians in Canada: How Hungarian Roma Refugees are Supported by Hungarian Canadian Social Workers
Focusing on the individual and collaborative work of Hungarian Canadian social workers in Toronto and their role in building bridges and supporting the Hungarian Roma community there, this workshop provides an opportunity for these women to share their experiences working with Roma families and youth. Frontline workers will shed light on the challenges of working with Canadians, including schools, healthcare workers, and others, when most of them have very little knowledge or awareness about the European Roma people. Frequently, in their work to support Hungarian Roma refugee families, they confront everyday discrimination—including racial slurs, stereotype-based questioning, social exclusion, and the systematic underestimation of Romani people in Canada.
